See you in London this week?
Hello {{first_name | there}},
Last week I was up in London for 2 very different eCommerce events.
The ChannelX conference - all about Amazon and marketplace selling, a big conference with loads of people
Women in eComm Live - about eCommerce success and career success, a much smaller affair with a women-only audience and stage.
Rather than give you a session-by-session account, I've grouped my takeaways into the lessons I'm taking from the events.
Less is more
Lots of talk at ChannelX about reducing sku count to focus on optimising the best products as much as possible - really focusing in on the winners.
Lots of talk at Women in eComm live about getting focused in the first place - looking for VS money? Work out which handful of VCs you SHOULD talk to rather than “spray and pray” to everyone.
This is course goes for everything! Which customers you target, which marketing channels you use, etc etc
And it seems to be becoming ever more important as we get deeper into an AI-supported business world.
More automation
At ChannelX the AI discussions were 99% about either getting discovered by Rufus, or improving product pages.
At Women in eComm Live, things went a lot deeper (not least because there was a whole panel on AI, which I got to be a part of). Automation (with or without AI) is clearly on most eCommerce stores' to-do list, but many are still at the start of their journey.
The best advice seems to be - work out what you can do now to solve a problem, or save time across the business, or improve customer experience.
Top areas for doing this…
Customer service - especially “where is my order” stuff - you've got the data… unleash it!
Personalisation and onsite triggers
Liberating data so it can be easily used by the whole team - for example… create a stock status dashboard with a traffic light system for what should be being pushed in marketing, or not. Saving lots of team meetings, AND improving sell through of the right stock.
Make decisions well, and stick to them.
In some ways it matters less that you make the perfect decision, and more that you actually make a decision and then stick to it.
How much time and energy in business is wasted by flip flipping between strategies and no real commitment to the way forward?
This goes from the big decisions to the tiny.
Anything from which metric is our north star to we're no longer pushing sales to the USA.
Use the quant and qual data, across channels
The single-channel business seems to be rapidly going out of fashion.
Those who are winning the multi-channel game (across own site, marketplaces, and wholesale) are the ones who are leveraging the quant and qual data from each channel across the other channels.
Using Amazon best-seller numbers to influence B2B customers stock a wider range or mining review data to improve future products.
Always be optimising
