eCommerce Expo Session Takeaways

Hello {{first_name | there}} ,

At eCommerce Expo this year I delivered a talk titled “3 Ways to Monetise Returns and Second Hand” - and I want to share the key messages from it with you over a few of our newsletters between now and Christmas.

Last time we covered my 3 Rules for Returns success, and now we’re getting into the circularity topics with…

Why do second-hand?

The obvious answer is that it's a growth market. Just in fashion:

  • Global second sales are predicted to reach $393bn by 2030 LINK

  • Vinted announced revenue increased 38% in 2025

Which is great if you're in the second-hand-only game like some of our past guests, Sole Responsibility and Haines Collection.

But if your primary business is new product, why would you want to get into a totally different business model that doesn't (usually) offer the same margin opportunity as new product?

  • You're moving from the world of multiple stock items per sku to one item per sku.

  • From stock that arrives ready to sell, to stock that needs lots of processing - from grading, to repairs and cleaning - before you can sell it

  • You rarely have much control over what stock you get and when.

  • In many verticals, not all the product will be saleable - so you'll have to find good ways to dispose of it.

So the overheads can be cripling, and it's adding a lot of complexity to your business.

So why do it?

Usually this boils down to one or more of these reasons:

  • The business values or purpose

  • Someone in the business’s values or purpose

  • Legislation requiring you to do something about second-hand products

  • Jealousy of Vinted

Watch out for the next 4 updates where I'll get into how to do it well - starting with Homes under the Hammer…

Keep Optimising!

Brand new episode: Phil Draper, Manago AI

Phil and I go WAY WAY back to when I used to do a lot of work with Dotdigital, across ebooks and events, and he was in charge of their marketing.

It’s great to have him on the show to talk all things Agentic and marketing because he’s just overseen Manago AI’s total shift to AI both in their tool and within the team.
